About CIWES
Collaborative Innovation Center for Western Ecological Safety
The Collaborative Innovation Center for Western Ecological Safety (Hereinafter referred to as CIWES), got identified by the first batch of Provincial and Ministry Co-built Center in December, 2018. Led by Lanzhou University, CIWES is collaboratively established by related Institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tibet University, Qinghai University, Gansu Institute of Desertification Control and other institutes. CIWES has 12 national key disciplines, in which the Atmospheric Science, Ecology and Agrostology are the "Double First-rate" construction disciplines, Earth Sciences, Environment, Ecology and Agronomy, Plant & Animal Science are the ESI global total impact top 1 disciplines.
CIWES sticks to the "Beautiful China" development strategy and the Belt and Road Initiative to center on the collaborative innovation of ecological safety construction in western regions. Supported by related disciplines such as Academy of Sciences, Ecology, Geography, Environtology, Economy and other high-level research institutes, CIWES focuses on impacts of climate change on water resources and ecosystems, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation in cold and arid regions, Desertification control and sandstorm prevention.
At present, CIWES has established 25 research and innovation teams, 6 integrated demonstration team and a data sharing team with more than 300 staffs. CIWES utilizes research strength inside and outside the university, has made a series of significant innovative scientific research achievements in the Western Ecological Safety. CIWES has undertaken more than 260 major projects entrusted by state or provincial governments and enterprises. As the host institute, CIWES has won two second prizes of National Natural Science Award, two second prizes of NationalScience and Technology Progress Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award Innovation Team Award, two top 10 Scientific and Technological Progress in Chinese Universities and the National Innovation Award, has also Published more than 400 high-level academic papers.
In the future, CIWES will focus on the western region, especially on the key scientific issues of regional ecological safety in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Loess Plateau, arid and semi-arid desert areas. To meet the major needs of national and regional industries, CIWES brings together superior resources and carries out joint research to to make major technological breakthroughs in western ecological safety research and Produce a group of first-class research results with significant driving effects. CIWES provides technical support and policy consultation for the sustainable economic and social development of the western region to promote stability in border areas, national ecological safety and common prosperity of all ethnic groups. CIWES works continuously to deepen the institution and mechanism reform and to enhance the efficiency of collaborative innovation, also strongly supports the discipline construction and talent cultivation of our university with innovative quality and service contribution. CIWES strives to build an international academic center that leads the frontier research in ecological safety, and to be the technology-leading group in the western section of the “Silk Road Economic Belt”.
